CCNY is the only team in men's history to win both the and the in the same year, 1950. However, this accomplishment was overshadowed by a scandal in which seven CCNY basketball players were arrested, in 1951, for taking money from gamblers to affect the outcome of games. The scandal led to the decline of CCNY from a national powerhouse in Division I basketball to a member of Division III and damaged the national profile of college basketball in general. The College currently fields nine men's and seven women's varsity athletic teams.

Friedman was not a scorer, but he knew how to set up a play, and was one of the first guards todefine his position in early basketball - get the ball first, and intimidate the other team so that theircarefully-crafted passing routines would fail. While Sedran spent his teenage years as captain ofthe CCNY basketball squad, becoming one of the earliest college basketball stars and laying thefoundation for CCNY's early basketball prominence, Friedman tested the professional waters, entering the cage with the semipro New York Roosevelts.

Holman began to coach CCNY in 1919, while he was still a player. He eventually coached CCNY for 37 seasons and compiled a 423-190 record. In 1950, he led City to an unprecedented achievement, winning both the NIT and NCAA tournaments in one season (they won both at Madison Square Garden within a 10-day period). Legendary LIU coach Clair Bee said: "No college team will ever duplicate this fabulous achievement." Towards the end of the 1950 regular season, however, it looked like the CCNY basketball team would not be invited to any post-season tournament. After rising to No. 7 in the AP poll earlier in the year, CCNY went through a second-half slump, during which they lost to Canisius, Niagara, and Syracuse. Only by sweeping the so-called "subway series" among metropolitan New York schools (Manhattan and NYU) did they earn an invitation to the NIT. Many believed the unranked 17-5 City team was headed for an early exit.

There is a kind of genius at work here that is comparable to the 1950 - 1951 CCNY Basketball team, which to this day is STILL the ONLY college basketball team to ever win BOTH the NIT & NCAA Championship in the same season. Not only did they will all of their games in BOTH tournaments, but they also covered the "point spread" because every single player had taken a "dive" with gamblers. And like the 1950 - 1951 CCNY Basketball team, the totality Smokey Robinson's accomplishment on BOTH the "horizontal & vertical tip" is actually difficult to comprehend anyone else duplicating!!!

of 1951, an undercover sting operation was conducted that found three stars from the 1950 CCNY basketball team guilty of point shaving.
